Forced oscillations and resonance : PHD015130
Référence : PHD 015 130
This apparatus enables the complete statics & dynamics study of the simple elastic pendulum.
For basic Education, some experiments:
• Static study: stiffness, elongation, balance position, Hook’s Law.
• Free oscillations dynamic study: specific period, damping, influence of friction.
• Forced oscillations dynamic study: resonance of physical system, influence of damping.
For Higher Education, the study can be deepen to experiments, such as:
• Differential equation of the system.
• Specific period, correlation between the theory & the experiment.
• Calculation of the damping degree, maximum amplitude according to the damping, quality factor of the system.
The studied oscillator is the spring, stiffness k ~ 20 N.m-1.
Characteristics:
A weight-holder plate is fitted to the spring by one rod & four weights are provides with apparatus.
A graduated stick moving along the vertical frame can be faced to a pointer fitted to the spring for ensuring the elongation reading.
A test tube full of oil or water, is used for the study of the fluid damping.
On the other hand, the weight-holder plate which is plunged into this test tube can be changed (different size of plates), in order to make the friction coefficient vary.
The spring is coupled to a motor via a disk, which insures near sinusoidal excitation of the system.
The excitation frequency is variable, while the static study is simply carried out with the stopped motor.
The excitation frequency is displayed on the motor box.
